Best Actor Performances from Martin Scorsese Films

These are the very best actor performances from Martin Scorsese films. Scorsese is undoubtedly one of the greatest directors, and his masterful movies always feature magnificent performances.

In this article, I will list down the greatest performances in Martin Scorsese movies without spoiling the characters or the plots of the included cinema. This list is not based on any ranking.

Daniel Day-Lewis as Bill the Butcher in Gangs of New York

Best Actor Performances from Martin Scorsese Films

Bill the Butcher is one Scorsese’s scariest characters; Daniel Day-Lewis’s jaw-dropping performance as him kind of puts all other performances of the movie to shame.

This xenophobic yet honorable gang leader is violent and powerful. Intimidation radiates with the way he walks, talks, and fights. As always, Daniel Day-Lewis’s insane method acting took place on the set of this film as well. Daniel used over-the-top method acting to fill this threatening character with life, and it all worked out masterfully in the end.

Joe Pesci as Tommy DeVito in Goodfellas

Best Actor Performances from Martin Scorsese Films

It’s hard to label a single performance from Goodfellas as the very best because the late Ray Liotta and the legendary Robert De Niro also performed in a way that flabbergasted viewers then and continues to do so now.

But Joe Pesci simply stands out as Tommy DeVito because this character is so over-the-top. That one scene, which I will not spoil, contains only a discussion. It’s the most intimidating and scariest scene in the film. Joe Pesci being only about 5’4” and still managing to silence the entire room with his charisma and sheer confidence is a thing of wonder.

Robert De Niro as Jake LaMotta in Raging Bull

Robert De Niro as Jake LaMotta in Raging Bull

Jake LaMotta is depicted as a violent boxer who rises to his popularity. His personal life is also shown in the movie as a major aspect of his character development. The way his profession affects his life is shown so beautifully in the black-and-white classic.

This is probably Robert De Niro at his very best in a Martin Scorsese film. This jealous, angry, and paranoid character is mesmerizing to watch, and De Niro’s performance as him can be pointed out as a master at work.

Al Pacino as Jimmy Hoffa in The Irishman

Al Pacino as Jimmy Hoffa in The Irishman

The Irishman is one of my personal favorite films by Martin Scorsese and its cast has a lot to do with that. With Joe Pesci, Robert De Niro, and Al Pacino as the main characters, it’s not difficult to tell that this film is a work of art by a genius artist at the very first glance.

All three of these giants in acting are winners of Academy Awards, and their exceptional performance in this huge film makes three hours go quickly. Despite all three of them being absolutely wonderful in this film, Al Pacino stands out for his performance as the quick-tempered and egotistical Jimmy Hoffa.

There are multiple scenes that define this film as one of the best crime movies in recent years. Almost all of them feature Al Pacino.

Leonardo DiCaprio as Jordan Belfort in The Wolf of Wall Street

Leonardo DiCaprio as Jordan Belfort in The Wolf of Wall Street

Based on a true story, this film is about the rise of Jordan Belfort as an extremely rich playboy with his underhanded tactics and criminal activities. This character is quite debaucherous, and he’s depicted as a drug addict who’s a capitalist through and through.

Leonardo DiCaprio is absolutely perfect in this role. This being a dark comedy movie, there are more than a few instances that can make you laugh out loud, and Leo’s acting is simply so authentic and believable that these over-the-top scenes get stuck in your head forever. In my opinion, this is one of his very best performances that can rival his performance in The Revenant.
